The Jurnal Kajian dan Pengembangan Umat, published by the Faculty of Islamic Studies, Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Barat, is committed to maintaining academic integrity and ethical standards in scholarly publishing. The journal does not tolerate plagiarism or any form of unethical appropriation of intellectual work.
1. Definition of Plagiarism
Plagiarism is the use of another person's ideas, words, data, findings, or other intellectual contributions without proper acknowledgment. Plagiarism includes, but is not limited to:
- · Direct Plagiarism: Copying text or material from another source without appropriate quotation and citation.
- · Mosaic Plagiarism: Combining phrases or passages from various sources without adequate acknowledgment.
- · Paraphrasing Plagiarism: Presenting another person's ideas in different words without citing the original source.
- · Self-Plagiarism: Reusing substantial portions of one's previously published work without proper citation or disclosure.
- · Data and Image Misappropriation: Using data, figures, tables, photographs, or other materials without appropriate acknowledgment or permission where required.
2. Plagiarism Screening
All submitted manuscripts may be screened using plagiarism detection software before or during the peer-review process.
Similarity reports are used as an initial screening tool and are not the sole basis for determining plagiarism. The editorial team evaluates the context, sources, nature, and extent of textual similarity, taking into account properly cited quotations, references, standard terminology, and other legitimate overlaps.
The journal applies a recommended maximum similarity index of 20% as an initial screening benchmark. A similarity score below this threshold does not automatically mean that a manuscript is free from plagiarism, while a score above it does not automatically establish plagiarism. Final decisions are made through editorial assessment.
3. Responsibilities of Authors
Authors submitting manuscripts to the journal must:
1. Ensure that their manuscripts are original and have not been published previously, except where explicitly permitted by the journal's policies.
2. Cite all sources used in developing their arguments, theoretical frameworks, research methods, and interpretations.
3. Use quotation marks or appropriate formatting for directly quoted material and provide accurate citations.
4. Obtain permission for copyrighted materials when necessary.
5. Disclose substantial overlap with their own previously published or submitted work.
6. Ensure that all references are accurate and that all borrowed ideas, data, and findings are properly acknowledged.
4. Actions in Cases of Plagiarism
When suspected plagiarism is identified, the editorial team will conduct an appropriate assessment and, where necessary, request clarification from the authors.
Depending on the severity and circumstances of the case, the journal may take one or more of the following actions:
- · Request corrections or revisions to the manuscript.
- · Reject the manuscript before publication.
- · Suspend the review or publication process while an investigation is conducted.
- · Retract a published article if serious misconduct is confirmed.
- · Notify the author's affiliated institution or other relevant parties when appropriate and justified.
Authors will normally be given an opportunity to respond to allegations before a final decision is made, while respecting the need to protect the integrity of the publication process.
5. Editorial Responsibility
The editorial board is responsible for assessing suspected plagiarism objectively, fairly, and consistently. Cases of suspected publication misconduct will be handled in accordance with the journal's publication ethics policies and relevant guidance from the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
6. Commitment to Academic Integrity
By submitting a manuscript to the Jurnal Kajian dan Pengembangan Umat, authors confirm that their work meets the journal's originality and citation requirements and that all sources have been appropriately acknowledged.
The journal reserves the right to reject manuscripts or take further action when plagiarism or other forms of publication misconduct are established. The journal is committed to promoting responsible research, transparent scholarly communication, and respect for intellectual property.
